Lincoln Memorial

Lincoln MemorialThe Lincoln Memorial is on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. The structure is patterned after a Greek Doric temple.

“In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” The statute of the 16th president sits beneath these words as as everlasting symbol of freedom and all who desire insight and hope.

A commission to design a memorial was first envisioned in 1867, very soon after Abraham Lincoln died. Congress finally passed the bill to build the memorial in 1919. Production began in 1914 and was, and was revealed to the public in 1922. The chambers to the north and south contain inscriptions of his second Inaugrual Adress and the famous Gettysburg Address.
